M.K.Narayan, Governor of West Bengal at Kalamandalam

Shri.M K Narayan, The Governor of W,Bengal and Rector of the Shantiniketan University had visited Kalamandalam in the banks of Bharathapuzha (Nila River) and had promised to facilitate the meeting of V.C of Shantiniketan with V.C of Kalamandalam (P N Suresh) so as to enable cooperation between two universities. It will be fantastic to have a cultural integration between thse two institutions of Arts and Culture. Both Universities will benefit from student exchange programs as well as multi-disciplinary courses jointly offered by Kalamandalam and Shantiniketan.

M K Narayan had the privilege to enjoy – Thayambaka Vadyam, Mohiniyattom, Kathakali – prominent scenes of ‘Duryodhana vadham’ portrayed by the famous Madavur Vasudevan Nair ( Duryodhanan) and Kalamandam Gopi ( Rowdra Bheeman)!

Probably everybody knows more on Kalamandalam. Let me give some details on Shantiniketan…….

Shantiniketan, the present small town was known as Bhubandanga (named after Bhuban Sinha). This enclave was gifted to Rabindranath's father, Maharshi Debendranath Tagore and got renamed it Shantiniketan, which means abode of peace.

Rabindranath Tagore started his school of ideals – Patha Bhavana wherein the concept of learning in a natural environment has become a precedent which is more enjoyable and fruitful. On becoming a Nobel Laureate (1913), the school was expanded into a university- Shantineketan in 1921. By 1951, it had become one of India's central universities. Many world famous teachers came to be associated with it, including C F Andrews and Alex Aronson

Who were C F Andrews and Alex Aronson? It will be interesting to know………

C.F Andrews was an English Priest who came to India as became a social reformer; He did convince Mahatma Gandhi to return from S.Africa to India to steer the freedom movement. His name was dubed as ‘Christs’ Faithful Apostle by Gandhi’. St.Stephen’s College had named him – ‘Deenabandhu’ meaning ‘Friend of Poor’. Once C.F. Andrews, along with Rabindranath Tagore had visited our great Sri Narayana Guru, the spiritual leader in Kerala. He had sent a letter to Romain Rolland, his friend (and French Novelist and historian who got Nobel Prize for literature in 1915) stating that "I have seen our Christ walking on the shore of Arabian Sea in the attire of a hindu sanyasin". Some of his illustrious students are Indira Gandhi, Satyajit Ray, Abdul Ghani Khan, Gayatri Devi, Amartya Sen

Alex Aronson was a Jew, but German, who could get refuge from the holocaust by settling in Shantiniketan. As he was educated in Cambridge, he wrote to Tagore. Who later on arranged for his travel to Calcutta and stayed in Shantiniketan during 1937 – 44 as English Teacher. He was in India until three years after Tagore’s death and was  responsible for large archive of news clippings on Tagore’s European trips.
